Evolution of African Folklore and Tales by Moonlight by Ayeni Taiwo Paul

I remember watching Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and African Independent Television (AIT) Channels from my childhood days, switching alternatively from one station to the other when the time for Tales by moonlight is broadcast. Although, the power supply deprived me of the pleasure watching sometimes, But the passion for those series doesn't quench. when I am opportune, I get to follow the programs from the regular call "story, story" to the conclusion that always end in songs.

Before I bore you out with my childhood adventure, let's see what has become of these childhood adventures of mine in our world of today.

African folklore are stories that's part of the African oral tradition which is delivered from a generation to the next. The existence of the African folktales/ folklores is an anonymous, timeless and story that is common among African community, and this is meant to hands down good morality, wisdom and knowledge from one generation to the next during Tales by moonlight. Therefore, African folktales are usually renders during Tales by moonlight under the supervision of an elder who is the orator - the story teller.

These Tales are usually about the great kings; the gods and goddesses; the animal kingdom; Natural phenomenon and so on. However, this tales are rich in unavoidable melodious rhymes which helps In preaching the subject matter of the story and also full of didactics and rich in moral values, explanation of the reasons for the world phenomenon such as: why the sky's are up, leopard has dotted skin, the moon shines and etc.

Fortunately, the folklore has span widely than what they are known as in the past. The origin of African folklore are in orality alone. But currently; with the introduction of civilization, mostly technology and printing press; the folklore have shifted form from oral to both oral, written and video graphics. So that, what is available only at the reach of the grandparents and elders, has now become accessible for all ages and all classes.

As a result of this, what we call story by moonlight tales has over the years becomes stories at all times tales. It can be read or told at anytime of the day, even as bed time story. Thanks to the evolution, I don't get to blame the power holding company for longs as I can easily to read most of the tales anytime.

Some of the popular tales include.

•The tortoise and hare

•The elephant and ant
